Field Adjusting Isn’t for Everyone but Here’s How to Know If It’s Right for You

Written by Jonni Bondarenko

Not everyone is built for this.

We have trained a lot of adjusters over the years. Some had the right mindset from day one. Others washed out after a few claims. They liked the idea of being in the field. They did not like the reality.

The truth is, field adjusting is part investigator, part problem solver, part negotiator, and part project manager. You are not sitting at a desk waiting for someone to hand you a file. You are driving to properties. Climbing ladders. Talking to clients face to face. Building your own schedule and keeping your own deadlines.

It is not a job for everyone. But for the right person, it can be the most rewarding work you will ever do.

Here is how to tell if field adjusting is a fit for you.

You Are Comfortable Being Independent

No one is going to clock your hours or micromanage your day. If you cannot manage your time, follow through on tasks, or hold yourself accountable, this is going to be tough.

But if you thrive when you are given freedom and control over your schedule, this is where you will shine. You will have the flexibility to build your day around inspections, estimates, and client calls. And you will be trusted to get it all done without being babysat.

You Are Good With People

This is not just about crawling on roofs and snapping photos. You will walk into homes where people are overwhelmed, frustrated, or scared. They need answers. They need someone who knows what they are doing.

You need to be able to connect with all kinds of people. Talk clearly. Listen well. Explain complicated policies in simple terms. If you are cold, robotic, or impatient, you will struggle.

But if you are a natural communicator who can build trust quickly, you will do well here.

You Can Handle Unpredictability

You might have three inspections lined up and then a pipe bursts on another claim. Your schedule changes. A client reschedules. A carrier adjuster ghosts you.

You cannot fall apart every time something does not go to plan. Field adjusting is for people who can pivot quickly, stay focused, and keep moving forward. If you need a predictable, clean-cut workday, this is not it.

But if you thrive in fast-paced, changing environments, you will fit right in.

You Want to Work With Purpose

This job is not just about writing estimates. It is about helping people recover. At PB Adjusting, we have seen firsthand how broken the system can be. We have also seen what happens when someone like you steps in and fights for what is fair.

If you are looking for a career that pays well and actually makes a difference, public adjusting delivers both. But you have to care. If you are just in it for the check, people will see through that quickly.

If you want to build something with meaning, you are in the right place.

You Are Willing to Learn

You are going to mess things up at first. You are going to second guess yourself. That is part of the process.

What matters is that you are willing to learn. Willing to ask questions. Willing to get better every week. At Adjusting Academy, we give you everything you need to get started the right way. But you have to bring the work ethic.

If you are willing to do that, we will show you the rest.

Final Thought

Field adjusting is not a fallback job. It is a real profession that demands real skills, real confidence, and real leadership.

If that sounds like you, you are in the right place. And we are here to help you get started the right way.
